The 2017 GMC Savana Passenger is the perfect choice for transporting a large group of people, whether you have a family too large to fit in a traditional mini or you’re a business owner who needs to transport customers. The Savana’s low cost of ownership is one of the most common reasons for choosing this passenger van. Its established track record and wide availability of parts are also advantages over its competitors.
The GMC Savana is mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Express. Together, the Express and Savana currently account for about 45 percent of the full-size van market in the United States. The Savana replaced the GMC Vandura in 1995, and it has been in continuous production ever since.
The Savana is still in its first generation, although the Savana received a major facelift in 2003. The front-end was updated to make it resemble GMC’s light trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) more closely. Stabilitrak, GMC’s stability control system, was added as an option in 2004. The interior was updated in 2008, and side-impact roof airbags became a standard feature on the Savana passenger vans in 2008.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the 2017 GMC Savana Passenger three out of five stars in the NHTSA’s rollover tests. The safety features of the Savana Passenger include six air bags, daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring system and blind-spot mirrors, StabiliTrak and an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with four-wheel disc brakes.
Rear parking assist is also available as an option. This safety feature includes sensors that detect stationary objects such as poles and parked cars behind the Savana at a range of up to five feet. An alert sounds before the vehicle makes contact.
The Roadside Assistance Package includes the following items in a black storage bag to provide added safety during a breakdown:
• Bungee cords
• Cotton rag
• Multi-bit screwdriver
• PVC insulating tape
• Slip-joint pliers

The Savana Passenger has several optional features for driving in cold weather, which are especially beneficial for passenger vans that spend a large amount of time idling. The cold climate package includes an engine block heater that increase the vehicle’s starting temperature on cold days, which is available for all versions of the Savana Passenger. This package also includes a fuel-operated auxiliary heat generator for vehicles with the 2.8-liter engine. This feature supplements the heating provided by the standard HVAC and rear auxiliary heater.
A heavy-duty battery is available as an option for all versions of the Savana. It has 770 cold-cranking amps with retained accessory power and rundown protection and retained accessory power. Another option for additional protection from cold weather is a primary battery with 600 cold-cranking amps and a secondary battery with 770 cold-cranking amps that’s isolated from the primary battery. This solution allows the secondary battery to power accessories when the vehicle isn’t running, without affecting the primary battery’s ability to start the vehicle.
The 2017 GMC Savana Passenger has three engine options, including a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder diesel engine, a 4.8-liter V8 gasoline engine and a 6.0-liter V8 gasoline engine. All versions of the 2017 Savana have rear-wheel drive (RWD) and a rear differential with a 3.42:1 gear ratio.
The 2.8-liter engine produces 181 horsepower (hp) at 3,400 revolutions per minute (rpm) and 369 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque at 2,000 rpm. An eight-speed automatic transmission and exhaust brake are also included with this engine.
The 4.8-liter engine produces 285 hp at 5,400 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm. The 6.0-liter engine produces 342 hp at 5,400 rpm and 373 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. Both of these engines have a six-speed automatic transmission. An external engine cooler is included with both of these engines. The 6.0-liter engine also accepts E85 FlexFuel, which is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. GMC
has more information on this alternative fuel.
A heavy-duty locking rear differential is also available for all transmissions as an option for the LT trim, which helps the Savana travel over rough terrain by locking the rear wheels together.
The 2017 Savana Passenger is available in three versions based on towing capacity. The 2500 series is GMC’s designation for the 3/4-ton class, which will be suitable for most buyers. When used as a passenger van
, this version seats 12 passengers with the regular wheelbase. The 3500 series, or 1-ton class, is better if you plan to regularly carry a full load of people or tow a trailer. This version seats 12 passengers with the regular wheelbase and 15 people with the extended wheelbase, which is more than other vans in its class. The Savana is also available in a 4500 series, or 1 ½-ton, cutaway version, which serves as the basis for conversion to specialty vehicles such as motor homes and wheelchair vans.
The 2500 version of the GMC Savana Passenger has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 8,600 lbs., which essentially means it can tow 8,600 lbs. when properly configured. The 3500 version has a GVWR of 9,600 lbs. These figures are for the 6.0-liter engine with 6-speed automatic transmission, which includes a towing mode. Towing requires a trailering hitch platform with a four-pin/seven-pin sealed connector and a seven-lead trailer wiring harness, which is available with the optional towing package. A variety of tow balls and hitches are also available as options for the Savana Passenger.
The total length of the 2017 Savana is 224.1 inches with the standard wheelbase of 135 inches and 244.1 inches with the extended wheelbase of 244.1 inches. The height is 81.6 inches for the standard wheelbase and 82.0 inches for the extended wheelbase. The width is 79.4 inches for both wheelbases.

• Cardinal Red
• Onyx Black
• Summit White
• Wheatland Yellow
The following premium colors are available for an additional charge:

Additional options that can change the exterior appearance of the 2017 Savana include chrome bumpers and grille, radiator grille cover and black assist steps along the sides of the vehicle. These molded steps have a black, textured surface that makes it easier to enter and exit your van.
The interior color for all versions of the 2017 is medium pewter. It has a spacious cargo area behind the rear seat that measures 92.1 cubic feet, which is enough to store carry-on luggage for every passenger. It can also be converted into a cargo van by removing all but the front seats, resulting in 252.8 cubic feet of space for models with the extended wheelbase. This is essentially the same configuration used by the GMC Savana Cargo.
The trim levels for the 2017 GMC Savana Passenger include the LS and the LT. These trim levels are available on both the 2500 and 3500 versions of the Savana Passenger, although some features differ.
The LS is the base trim level, which includes the 4.8-liter V8 and six-speed automatic transmission as the standard drivetrain. The 2.8-liter and 6.0-liter engine are also available as options for any body style of the Savana Passenger. The 6.0-liter engine will be preferable for hauling many people at a time, while the 2.8-liter engine would be a better choice if fuel efficiency is a priority.
Standard features for the LS trim include a 135-inch wheelbase that provides 12-passenger seating in a 2-3-3-4 configuration with a 50/50 split on the back row, and the opening for the passenger door has a 60/40-split. The standard sound system for the LS trim includes two speakers, AM/FM radio and an auxiliary audio port. Optional features for the sound system include a CD player, USB port, navigation capability and touchscreen. GMC’s OnStar
emergency communication system is also standard on the LS trim.
Cruise control and a tilt-only steering wheel are optional on 2500 models with the LS trim but standard on the 3500. The Chrome Appearance package is an option for the LS, which includes chrome on the grille, front and rear bumpers and composite headlights.
Additional standard features for the LS trim include the following:
• 16-inch steel wheels
• Power windows and locks
• Driver information display
• Vinyl upholstery and floor
The LT trim adds many features at a reasonable price, so most buyers will consider it a better option than the LS. In addition to the features on the LS trim, standard features on the LT include rear air-conditioning, cloth upholstery, carpeted floors and remote locking and unlocking. The rear air-conditioning feature includes a 150-amp alternator to handle the additional power usage. A 220-amp alternator is also available as a separate option, typically for vehicles with heavy-duty service requirements such as running external equipment.
The Chrome Appearance package is standard on the LT. Cruise control and a tilt-only steering wheel are standard for all versions of the Savana Passenger with LT trim. A rearview camera with a display in the rearview mirror is available for any Savana Passenger that doesn't already have a touchscreen.
The following stand-alone options are available for the LT trim:
• Heavy-duty locking rear differential
• Power-adjustable and heated mirrors
• Power-adjustable front seats
• Remote vehicle start
• Rear parking sensors
• Leather-wrapped steering wheel
• Satellite radio
• 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
The 3500 is available with a 155-inch wheelbase that increases the Savana Passenger’s length by 20 inches, allowing another row of seats to be added in a 15-passenger 2-3-3-3-4 configuration. The longer wheelbase includes rear air-conditioning, which is also an option for models with the standard wheelbase. The Paratransit package is available for 3500 models with the extended wheelbase, which removes the rear seat and replaces the carpeting with a vinyl floor covering. These features make it easier to load passengers in wheelchairs.
